"The masajid belong to Allah, so call upon none besides Him" - Sahih International

Why We Started This Service

While visiting masajid across the UK for prayers and Islamic events, we began noticing a troubling pattern. Many of our beautiful prayer carpets - the sajjadah that connect us to Allah during our most sacred moments - were deteriorating.

We observed carpets with embedded dirt, stains that had become permanent, and once-vibrant Islamic patterns fading away. Some masajid were using harsh commercial cleaners that damaged the delicate fibers, while others simply couldn't afford professional maintenance.

The situation became clear during a Ramadan visit to a local masjid. The carpet in the mihrab area - where the imam leads prayer - had visible stains and an unpleasant odor. This is where Muslims prostrate to Allah, where they place their faces on the ground in ultimate submission.

We realized that Allah's houses deserved better. The same reverence we show when entering these sacred spaces should extend to maintaining them with the highest standards of cleanliness and care.

Carpet Care Excellence

What We Observed in UK Masajid

Inappropriate Cleaning Methods

Many masajid were using household cleaners or harsh chemicals. Some carpets were damaged by steam cleaning that wasn't suitable for delicate Islamic carpets with intricate patterns. some mosques were only vacuming and not getting the carpets washed for decades.

Need for Sacred-Space Specialists

While other commercial carpet cleaners excel at general cleaning, they specialize in cleaning techniques rather than understanding the sacred nature of masajid. Most work across hotels, restaurants, and domestic properties, creating potential cross-contamination from non-sacred environments into the holy spaces where Muslims prostrate. They may also lack awareness of prayer times, shoe removal protocols, and the general special reverence of the masaajid.

Financial Constraints

Many masajid operated on tight budgets, unable to afford regular professional cleaning. This led to carpet deterioration that could have been prevented with proper maintenance.

The Masjid Extends to Seven Heavens

The Prophet ﷺ taught us that the sanctity of a masjid extends upward to the seven heavens. This means every masjid on earth has a corresponding sacred space in each level of the heavens, making it one of the most blessed places in creation.

Reference: Narrated in various forms by Ibn Majah, Sunan Ibn Majah, Hadith 750; Al-Haythami in Majma' al-Zawa'id, Volume 2, p. 24

"There is no masjid on earth except that it has a counterpart in the heavens"

Cosmic Significance: This teaching reveals that masajid are not merely earthly buildings, but sacred spaces connected to the highest realms of creation.

Most Beloved Places to Allah

Reference: Sahih Muslim, Book 4, Hadith 1594

"The most beloved places to Allah are the masajid"

"And the most hated places to Allah are the markets"

Divine Promise: Allah has declared His love for these spaces above all others on earth, making their care and maintenance an act that brings us closer to what Allah loves most.

Fiqh Rulings for Entering Masajid

Upon entering: "O Allah, open for me the doors of Your mercy"

Prophetic Teaching on Masjid Reverence

The Prophet ﷺ taught: "When one of you enters the masjid, let him send peace upon the Prophet ﷺ and say: 'O Allah, open for me the doors of Your mercy"

Reference: Sunan Abu Dawud, Book 2, Hadith 465; Sunan Ibn Majah, Book 5, Hadith 773

"Legal punishments are not to be carried out in masajid, nor should retribution take place in them"

Reference: Sunan Abu Dawud, Book 2, Hadith 472; Classification by scholars as establishing the sanctity of masajid

The Prophet ﷺ emphasized the special status of prayer in the masjid, showing how these spaces hold unique spiritual significance above all other places of worship.

Prophetic Wisdom: The Prophet ﷺ established comprehensive etiquette showing that masajid are not ordinary buildings but sacred spaces requiring special conduct, reverence, and care.

What Makes Masajid Different from All Other Places

1. Divine Connection

Quranic Declaration: Allah specifically claims ownership of masajid, unlike any other buildings. They are "Bayt Allah" (Houses of Allah), making them extensions of the Divine presence on earth.

2. Heavenly Connection

Cosmic Significance: Each masjid has a corresponding space in all seven heavens, making them unique portals between earth and the celestial realms.

3. Angels' Presence

"The angels pray for one of you as long as he remains in his place of prayer" - Angels constantly inhabit masajid, making them different from any other space on earth.

Reference: Sahih Bukhari, Book 8, Hadith 466

4. Multiplied Rewards

Prayer in masajid carries exponentially greater reward than in any other location. This shows their unique spiritual potency.

Reference: Sahih Bukhari, Book 30, Hadith 1190

5. Protected Status

Legal Immunity: Islamic law provides special protection for masajid - they cannot be sold, demolished, or converted to other purposes. Even in war, they are protected spaces.

6. Eternal Endowment (Waqf)

Masajid continue to benefit their builders and maintainers even after death, as ongoing charity (sadaqah jariyah) - a unique eternal investment.

Examples from the Prophetic Sunnah

The Prophet ﷺ Cleaning Masjid an-Nabawi

Reference: Narrated by Ibn Majah in Sunan Ibn Majah, Book of Masajid, Hadith 758

The Prophet ﷺ himself used to sweep the masjid. This shows us that cleaning Allah's house is not beneath anyone - it's an honor and act of worship.

The Lesson: If the best of creation ﷺ cleaned the masjid personally, then maintaining masajid is among the most noble of deeds.

There was a woman who used to clean the masjid. When she died, the Prophet ﷺ asked about her and was told she had died during the night. He said: "Why did you not inform me? Show me her grave." Then he went to her grave and prayed the funeral prayer for her.

Reference: Sahih Bukhari, Book 8, Hadith 458 & Sahih Muslim, Book 4, Hadith 2217

The Prophet ﷺ said: "إِنَّ هَذِهِ الْقُبُورَ مَمْلُوءَةٌ ظُلْمَةً عَلَى أَهْلِهَا وَإِنَّ اللَّهَ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ يُنَوِّرُهَا لَهُمْ بِصَلَاتِي عَلَيْهِمْ" - These graves are filled with darkness for their occupants, and Allah illuminates them through my prayer for them.

The Lesson: Those who clean masajid hold such honor that the Prophet ﷺ personally prayed for them. This humble service is elevated in Allah's sight.

Building and Maintaining Masajid

Reference: Sahih Bukhari, Book 8, Hadith 441 & Sahih Muslim, Book 5, Hadith 533

"Whoever builds a masjid seeking Allah's pleasure, Allah will build for him something similar in Paradise"

The scholars explain that maintaining existing masajid - including cleaning and preserving them - falls under the same category of reward as building them. Every act of care for Allah's house is rewarded.

The Promise: Allah promises a house in Paradise for those who care for His houses on earth. Cleaning and maintaining masajid is included in this tremendous reward.

Regular Masjid Maintenance

Reference: Sunan Abu Dawud, Book of Prayer, Hadith 455

The Prophet ﷺ used to command the cleaning and purification of the masjid. He established regular maintenance as a sunnah practice, not just occasional cleaning.

The Principle: Regular, consistent care of masjid is a prophetic tradition that ensures that these sacred spaces remain pure and beautiful.

Islamic Schools of Thought on Masjid Care

Sufi Tradition - Spiritual Cleansing

Sheikh Abdul Qadir Gilani رحمه الله taught: "The cleanliness of the outer masjid purifies the inner masjid of the heart. When we clean Allah's house with love and devotion, our souls are simultaneously purified."

Hazrat Data Ganj Bakhsh رحمه الله emphasized: "The fragrance of a clean masjid attracts the angels, and where angels gather, divine mercy descends abundantly."

Sources: Kashf al-Mahjub by Data Ganj Bakhsh, p. 234; Futooh al-Ghaib by Sheikh Abdul Qadir Gilani, Volume 2, p. 67

Sufi Understanding: Physical cleanliness is inseparable from spiritual purification - both the zahir (external) and batin (internal) must be pure.

Shia School - Emphasis on Sanctity

Imam Ja'far as-Sadiq رضي الله عنه said: "The masajid are gardens of Paradise on earth. Keep them as pure as you would wish Paradise to be." The Shia tradition places great emphasis on the ritual purity required for maintaining sacred spaces.

Contemporary Shia scholars like Ayatollah Sistani emphasize that cleaning masajid is not just recommended but obligatory upon the community, especially when neglect would lead to disrespect of the sacred space.

Sources: Al-Kafi by Al-Kulayni, Volume 3, Hadith 662; Minhaj as-Salihin by Ayatollah Sistani, Volume 1, p. 156

Shia Principle: Maintaining masajid connects to the concept of wilayah (guardianship) - caring for Allah's houses as the Imams would have done.

Barelvi School - Love for Prophet's Tradition

Imam Ahmad Raza Khan رحمه الله wrote: "Following the blessed sunnah of our beloved Prophet ﷺ in maintaining masajid is an expression of our love (ishq) for him. Every act of cleaning done with this intention becomes an act of devotion."

Allama Hashmat Ali Khan emphasized: "The masajid should be kept so beautiful and clean that they reflect the beauty of our faith and our love for the Prophet ﷺ who himself cleaned the sacred masjid."

Sources: Fatawa Razvia by Imam Ahmad Raza Khan, Volume 6, p. 234; Anwar-e-Shariat by Allama Hashmat Ali Khan, Part 2, p. 89

Barelvi Focus: Masjid beautification and maintenance is seen as an expression of muhabbat (love) for the Prophet ﷺ and following his blessed example.

Deobandi School - Strict Adherence to Sunnah

Maulana Ashraf Ali Thanvi رحمه الله emphasized: "The cleanliness of masajid is not optional but a sunnah that has reached the level of obligation. We must follow the exact method the Prophet ﷺ used, with complete dedication and without innovation."

Maulana Ilyas رحمه الله (founder of Tablighi Jamaat) said: "When we invite people to masajid, we must ensure these sacred spaces are maintained according to prophetic standards, for a clean masjid itself is a form of dawah."

Sources: Bahishti Zewar by Maulana Thanvi, Volume 1, p. 78; Malfoozat-e-Hazrat Ilyas by Maulana Ilyas, p. 134

Deobandi Approach: Strict adherence to prophetic methods of masjid maintenance, viewing it as essential sunnah that must be preserved exactly as practiced.

Salafi School - Return to Original Practice

Sheikh Ibn Uthaymeen رحمه الله stated: "Maintaining masajid as the Prophet ﷺ and the righteous Salaf did is returning to pure Islamic practice, free from cultural additions but rich in prophetic authenticity."

Sheikh Salih al-Fawzan emphasizes: "The cleanliness standards set by the Prophet ﷺ and followed by the Companions are sufficient and perfect. We need not add to them, but we must not neglect them."

Sources: Sharh Riyad as-Salihin by Sheikh Ibn Uthaymeen, Volume 3, p. 156; Al-Mulakhkhas al-Fiqhi by Sheikh Salih al-Fawzan, Volume 1, p. 89

Salafi Principle: Masjid maintenance should follow only the prophetic model and the practice of the first three generations, without cultural or innovative additions.

Hanafi School - Comprehensive Fiqh Approach

Imam Abu Hanifa رحمه الله established detailed fiqh principles: "The waqf (endowment) of masajid includes their maintenance. Community members have graduated responsibilities based on their means and proximity to ensure no masjid lacks proper care."

Al-Marghinani in Al-Hidayah states: "Cleaning masajid is fard kifayah (communal obligation) - if some fulfill it adequately, others are relieved, but if none do it properly, the entire community bears responsibility."

Sources: Al-Hidayah by Al-Marghinani, Volume 2, p. 456; Radd al-Muhtar by Ibn Abidin, Volume 3, p. 234

Hanafi Framework: Systematic legal approach ensuring masjid maintenance through community responsibility and structured obligations.

Maliki School - Community-Centered Approach

Imam Malik رحمه الله emphasized the Medina practice: "The people of Medina never allowed their masajid to fall into disrepair. This is the living sunnah we must follow - community ownership of masjid care."

Al-Qurtubi writes: "Masjid maintenance is among the 'urf (customary practices) that Islam endorses. Each community must adapt prophetic principles to their local needs while maintaining the essential spirit."

Sources: Al-Muwatta by Imam Malik, Volume 1, p. 67; Tafsir al-Qurtubi, Volume 9, p. 234

Maliki Wisdom: Balancing prophetic principles with community customs, ensuring masjid care remains a living, practiced tradition.

Hanbali School - Literal Following of Texts

Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal رحمه الله established: "Masjid maintenance follows directly from the Quran and Sunnah without need for analogical reasoning. The Prophet ﷺ cleaned masajid, the Companions cleaned masajid - this is sufficient proof of obligation."

Imam Al-Nawawi in Al-Majmu' details: "The cleaning of masajid involves multiple categories of Islamic law - purification law, community obligations, and the etiquette of sacred spaces. Each must be observed with precision."

Al-Ghazali wrote: "The external cleaning of masajid purifies the physical space for worship, while the internal devotion of those who clean them purifies their hearts. Both dimensions must be cultivated."

Sources: Al-Majmu' Sharh al-Muhadhdhab by Al-Nawawi, Volume 4, p. 156; Ihya Ulum al-Din by Al-Ghazali, Volume 1, p. 234; Al-Risala by Imam Al-Shafi, p. 89

Hanbali Principle: Direct adherence to Quranic and prophetic texts makes masjid maintenance a clear religious obligation, not subject to interpretation.

Shafi School - Methodical Balance

Imam Al-Shafi رحمه الله taught: "Masjid cleanliness combines the obligations of tahara (purification) with ihsan (excellence). Both the legal requirement and the spiritual excellence must be achieved simultaneously."

Imam Al-Nawawi in Al-Majmu' details: "The cleaning of masajid involves multiple categories of Islamic law - purification law, community obligations, and the etiquette of sacred spaces. Each must be observed with precision."
